Khuda Aur Mohabbat :

Khuda Aur Mohabbat (God and Love) is a Pakistani drama serial. It is based on the bestselling novel of same name by Hashim Nadeem Khan. This is the first dramatic adaptation of any of his novels. Episode 1 of serial was aired in February 2011 on Geo TV. Season 1 lasted for 14 episodes (February to May) with each episode running for 40 mins. Season 1 was shot in Lahore and Bahawalpur by JJS Productions. Following the success of season 1, the producers (Javeria Saud and Babar Javed) decided to a sequel. First episode of season 2 was televised in October 2016. Season 2 is shot in USA and Lahore. Raichand Mohsin Khan wrote the adapted screen play. Anjum Shehzad directed season 1 while Syed Ali Raza Usam is directing season 2. Khuda Aur Mohabbat is a love story. It explores a young man’s journey from ‘Ishq-e-Mijazi’ to ‘Ishq-e-Haqiqi’. Word ‘Khuda’ represents God and religious ideology while ‘Mohabbat’ represents human emotions of love.  The serial addresses social difference between rich and poor and lack of acceptance for love among religious people.

Synopsis (Season 1)

Khuda aur Mohabbat introduces a rich young graduate Hammad. He sees a young religious girl ‘Iman’ and falls for her. His life changes enormously after falling in love. Iman comes from a poor family. Her father ‘Moulvi Aleemuddin’ is an imam of local mosque who teaches Quran to children. Iman is under the influence of Aleemuddin who is a domineering father. She has been brought up in a religious environment. Hammad tries to get close to Iman. She is hesitant to accept Hammad’s true love due to her shyness and social pressure.  Hammad’s materialistic family discovers his interest in Iman. They want Hammad to forget her. They insult Aleemuddin. Aleemuddin is unable to understand the concept of true love. As a result, Aleemuddin gets estranged with Hammad and his daughter. The situation causes a rift between Hammad and his family.

The tale of Khuda aur Mohabbat continues. Hammad leaves his family and wealth for Iman. Unable to find an appropriate job, Hammad undertakes labor jobs. At one point, he even works as a porter. In a hope to make him suitable for Iman and her father, Hammad turns to religion. This shifts his focus from Ishq-e-Mijazi to Ishq-e-Haqiqi. Iman acknowledges Hammad’s true love and develops feelings for him. However, Aleemuddin is unable to forgive the insult he received from the hands of Hammad’s family. Iman is engaged to her cousin Abdullah. She tells Hammad that they can’t be united in this world but in next world. She asks Hammad to go back to his family but he declines. The situation is very depressing for Iman and Hammad. Iman is unable to handle the stress and falls ill. Eventually, she dies. Hammad is heartbroken over Iman’s death. He collapses due to grief. Hammad’s family and Aleemuddin realize their mistakes but it’s too late.

Synopsis (Season 2)

The story of Khuda aur Mohabbat resumes. It begins with a recap of season 1. Hammad reunites with his family. He goes to American to pursue higher studies. Hammad has not been able to forget Iman. He encounters a Jewish girl named Sarah. She is dean’s daughter who falls for Hammad. Hammad is criticized for his opposition to Jewish concept of Holocaust. He is forced to leave America. Sarah accepts Islam before he leaves. She requests him to come back.

Reception

Khuda aur Mohabbat was received well by public and drama critics. It became popular among the masses. Imran Abbas Naqvi, Sadia Khan and Salman Shahid were highly praised for their convincing performances. Season 1 of serial was commercially and critically acclaimed. It received mostly positive reviews in the papers and internet forums. Some aspects of serial were criticized by members of religious community. The success of season 1 prompted producers to start working on season 2.

Original Sound Track (OST) / Title Song (Karun Sajda Aik Khuda Ko) was sung by Ahmed Jahanzeb and Afshan Fawad. The heart touching lyrics were written by Javeria Saud.
